Glacier Park, September 2012

The day after returning to Bozeman from the L.A. trip, I left for Glacier National Park. The drive up to St. Mary was beautiful, except for the excessive smoke. I would highly recommend GNP to anyone who has never been there. It is one of the most beautiful parts of Montana, and the country as a whole.

LA Dodgers salesmen

I recently returned from a weeklong trip to Los Angeles with Logan Triplett and Brian Bee. We skated, saw friends, explored the city, and went to a Dodgers game. I was intrigued by the food and drink vendors... people of varying ages, wandering up and down rows and rows of people with their product held high in the air.

Alex Strandell

I shot this photo on my Mamiya C330, a medium format film camera. I really enjoy using this camera because it is completely mechanical. No batteries or LCD screens needed.

Child. Guangzhou, China.

As soon as we showed up at the spot, this kid grabbed my board and started pushing around on his stomach. Getting my board back from him was a chore, he really didn't want to stop skating!

Hong Kong

After Pingan, I spent a day in Shenzhen before leaving China and crossing the border into Hong Kong.  Hong Kong was the most diverse city I had seen in Asia, with people from all over the globe walking the streets. I stayed in the Chunking Mansion, which, contrary to the name, was an expensive and tiny room that I shared with cockroaches. Like every other city I visited, most of my time was spent exploring the streets, on foot and on a skateboard.

The most amazing skyline I have ever seen.

Looking across the water at Hong Kong from Kowloon

Pingan

After an expensive taxi ride, I arrived in the small village of Pingan, which is known for its terraced rice fields. They are a pretty stunning feat of agricultural engineering.

Shanghai and Yangshuo

After Qingdao, I hopped on a train south to Shanghai. The trip took seven hours but was very comfortable.

Shanghai is an incredible city. Most of my time was spent walking or skating through the streets. Shanghai is also home to the world's largest skatepark, which is mostly unused by locals due to the price of admission (approx US$5).

The Pudong skyline.

After Shanghai I took an overnight train to the city of Guilin, in southern China. From Guilin, I boarded a bus for an hour ride to Yangshuo, located on the Li river. Yangshuo is a small town, catering mostly to tourists who come to see the beautiful landscape.

I rented a bicycle and explored the countryside.

Miah Jones

After skating this flatbar in front of Bozeman High School, Miah, Dallas, and myself decided to skate through the smooth hallways. We carved past lockers on the perfect floor, then stopped at the top of a set of stairs to hear the janitor yelling at us. I didn't think much of it, but Miah and Dallas took off. I followed them out the door and into the parking lot, down the street, finally stopping in an alleyway near Dallas' house. We laughed about what just happened. Miah was worried that he may get a call into the Principals office.

Qingdao

The city of Qingdao is located on the coast, across from South Korea. I didn't know where to go after Beijing, then I had heard from fellow travelers about Qingdao, home of the Tsingtao beer brewery. The city was a unique mix of modern skyscrapers and old German architecture. It also seemed to attract a large number of Chinese tourists.

There was a lot of construction going on. The city was installing a subway, as well as many new skyscrapers.

Tourists were everywhere

In the background you can see the famous Pagoda that graces the Tsingtao beer logo.

Found this guy near the train station

I took a tour through the large brewery. As I exited, I found myself on "beer street", with bars and restaurants lining the busy sidewalks.

After the tour, I witnessed a man and woman arguing at the table next to mine. The guy slapper her on the back of the head, and she smashed two beer bottles on the ground at his (and my) feet. He stormed off, and two employees swept up the glass. Anyway, directly after that, I stumbled up the street (free samples during the brewery tour) and found these nice folks.
